Hello everyone. This month I’d like to give you another column filled with odds ‘n ends, things that I have looked at recently (and some not so recently) but that I think LET members might be interested in. Over the holidays, if you have a little time, you may want to take a look at these sites.

The first one is a site that I keep hearing about : Second Life. Apparently it is very popular with educators. It’s not that they are using it with their students, but rather that they are playing themselves. You can find the site at http://secondlife.com/. and you can join and interact with the almost 2 million people who have created a second virtual life for themselves online. I’m not sure if I would recommend this for students. I think the Under-18 version (also accessible from the main page) might be an interesting way to practice English. See what you think.

The next two sites are environmentally oriented. In the first, we can pretend we are residents of England planning a trip to the European continent for a holiday. We can choose how we’ll travel and then see the environmental cost of our trip. It’s a nice little interactive lesson. http://www.open2.net/home/view?entityID=31887&jsp=themed_learning%2Fexpanding_viewer&entityName=object.
The second is Zam’s Quest, where we can learn about wildlife conservation issues by considering the perspectives of different people: farmers, scientists, etc. It can be found at http://www.zamsquest.com/.

And lastly, another little game, The Kitchen Conundrum word game. You have to race against the clock to rearrange the letters and make a word. You can choose the subject matter and get a hint. It’s fun but a little difficult. http://ougames.greencathedral.com/KitchenKonundrum/.

Well, that’s it for this month. Have a very happy holiday this year and see you next year.
