June 2011 Treasure Hunt
Qwiki, COCA, and AZAR Grammar
Marcel Van Amelsvoort (Kanagawa Prefectural College of Foreign Studies)

It’s June already! And this month I have no theme to organize the links I wantto introduce: a search engine, a vocabulary resource, and a grammarresource site.

First up is something that is very impressive. It’s a visual searchengine that givesyou a multimedia presentation when you search. Just type in the term you wantto search for and wait a moment. Then in images and audio narration your topiccomes to life. You really need to try it to understand it. One noteof caution isthat this search engine does not censor or filter content―so be careful of whatterms you use to search! http://www.qwiki.com/

COCA, or the Corpus of Contemporary American English, is a resourcemaintained by Mark Davies of Brigham Young University where you canfind information on vocabulary frequency, collocations, and where itemsappear (magazines, literature, etc.). It is a brilliant resource forfinding moreinformation about vocabulary items (words, phrases, or longer chunks).http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/

And finally, one of the best grammar books I’ve ever used is Fun With Grammar:Communicative Activities for the Azar Grammar Series. Well, the entire book ofphotocopiable activities is available online from the Azar site, alongwith lots ofother great resources for teaching grammar. This is a resource sitefor classroomteachers but there is also a link for a web-based interactive site that you canregister for and try for free for 30 days. I didn’t do that and I amnot familiar withthe online Azar materials, but I can say that their other materialsare really greatand you might want to check them out. http://www.azargrammar.com/index.html
