Hope everyone had a nice summer. This month I’ve got a whole bunch ofwebsites to introduce. The first group is search engines that youmight want to get your young learners to use if you are having themsearch the web. And the second group contains some unrelated websitesthat were recommended recently by Time Magazine.

We generally take search engines for granted. Except for Google, theyare mostly embedded in pages filled with images, text and adverts. Andeven Google isn’t so kid friendly. But try Kidrex.(http://www.kidrex.org/). It has a nice animated interface and asearch engine based on Google (with Safe Search) that brings back goodkid-friendly results. There is also Qwiki, which I mentioned in a pastcolumn. It’s still fun and it is safe for kids to use.http://www.qwiki.com/

If typing skills are a problem, here is a BBC site that teaches it ina fun kid-friendly way. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

Time Magazine recently released their list of the top 50 websites ofthe year. After checking them out, I found a few that I really likedand would like to pass on. If you’d like to view the whole listyourself, you can find it athttp://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/0,28757,2087815,00.html

The first is Howcast. It contains instructional videos that are verynicely done and contain all the necessary information on the videopage so you don’t have to keep searching the video itself. Great forrecipes, for example. If you’ve ever used YouTube for How-to videos, you’ll appreciate Howcast. http://www.howcast.com/

Proust is a site that could be used as a project for older learners. The system prompts you with questions and asks you to submit images asit builds a sort of personal biography of you. http://www.proust.com/

If you occasionally look for short reading texts or topics that areinteresting and accessible to your learners, try Wonderopolis. Highinterest topics and the writing is good and simple. Some articles havevideos, too. http://wonderopolis.org/

And finally, for those people with a little extra time on their hands,or for your more ambitious learners who would like to get a taste of atop-level American university classroom, Yale is making entire coursesavailable on the web. All lectures are available in video, audio andtext transcript forms. Great stuff. http://oyc.yale.edu/
