Traveling from Tenjin to Hakata:

By 100-Yen Loop Bus

  • Perhaps the best place to catch a Hakata-bound 100-yen bus is at the Tenjin Core-mae (7) bus stop in front of the Tenjin Core Building (facing Watanabe-dori). The Japanese signs at the bus stop will read “天神コア前 (7)” , with bus stop designations “A” and “B”. Ignore these designations as buses will stop wherever they can find space!
  • To catch a Hakata-bound bus, pay attention to the buses’ en-route signs. Look for “Hakata Station”, “博多駅方面” or “100円バス”.
  • In general, there’ll be a Hakata-bound bus at least once every 10 minutes, and much more frequently during busy hours. Here’s a typical weekday morning schedule.
  • Once you’re on the bus, you’ll follow any of these routes in green (pdf file) to the Hakata JR Station. It’s a 12-15 minute ride to Hakata Station.
  • Depending on the bus you catch, you’ll be dropped off at various locations nearby Hakata Station. Ask the bus driver if you’re not sure.
  • Here’s a map of the Hakata Station vicinity. If you’re not sure where to go next, ask the Hakata Station Tourist Information Center for help.

By Subway

  • In Tenjin, find your way to the Tenjin Subway Station. The closer you are to the intersection of Watanabe-dori and Meiji-dori, the closer you are to the heart of the Tenjin Subway Station. Perhaps the closest street-level subway entrances would be either at the front of the Fukuoka Building 福岡ビル or in front of the Tenjin Building 天神ビル which is on the opposite corner of that intersection.
  • Upon descending through either of these entrances, you’ll find yourself at a huge, underground pedestrian intersection. You are in between the East and West Subway Entrances. Follow the signs to either entrance. If necessary, seek assistance at the Information Booth 案内所 located at the center of this busy foot traffic intersection.
  • Purchase a ¥200 ticket (for Hakata 博多) from any of the automated subway ticket vending machines lining the entrance. Instructions are also in English.
  • You’ll need to line up on the platform whose trains are headed east (Fukuoka-Kuko 福岡空港 on the Kuko-sen 空港線).
  • Caution:
    1. Do not use the west-bound (Meinohama – Karatsu 姪浜・唐津方面)
    2. Avoid using the east-bound Kaizuka Line 貝塚線 – The transfer at Nakasu-Kawabata to get back on an airport-bound train can be a little confusing.
  • Here’s a weekday timetable for east-bound trains.
  • Take an airport-bound train, and you’ll reach the Hakata stop just three stops away (5 minutes). At your first stop, you’ll hear announcements for passengers transferring to the Kaizuka Line貝塚線 – Just ignore the announcements and stay on your train.
  • Upon exiting the Hakata Station ticket gate, take the escalator up to the Hakata JR Station ground level. Here’s an overview of the Hakata JR Station map. If you’re not sure where to go next, ask the Hakata Station Tourist Information Center for help.

By Taxi

  • The daytime taxi fee to get from Tenjin Station (Nishitetsu) to Hakata JR Station would run you over ¥1200 (not using the City Expressway), and the ride would take about 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Rates increase 20% between the hours of 23:00 and 5:00.
