Traveling from Hakata to Fukuoka University:
By Subway
- At Hakata Station, find your way to the Hakata Subway Station. Any of the escalators found along the central concourse of the two main exits (Hakata Exit / Chikushi Exit) will lead you down to the Subway Station. Ask the Hakata Station Tourist Information Center where it is if you’re not sure.
- Find a subway ticket machine, and Purchase a ¥290 ticket (for Fukudai-mae 福大前) from any of the automated subway ticket vending machines lining the entrance. Instructions are also in English.
- You’ll need to line up on the platform whose trains are headed west (Meinohama Karatsu 姪浜・唐津方面) and not east (Fukuoka Airport 福岡空). Here’s a weekday timetable for west-bound trains.
- Take a west-bound train to Tenjin 天神 which is just 3 stops away (5 minutes).
- THE TRANSFER: When exiting the Tenjin Subway Station, be sure you use the GREEN “transfer” ticket gate. There should be signs in English indicating the location of the transfer ticket gate, along with signs leading you along the way to the Tenjin-MINAMI Station on the Nanakuma Line. Be sure to keep your ticket with you You’ll reuse it at the Tenjin-MINAMI Station.
- From there, you’ll have to transfer to a different subway line (Nanakuma Line 七隈線) via a 5-10 walk through the Tenjin Underground Shopping Mall (if this link does not open to a map overview, click '8' in the left hand menu).
- Enjoy taking in the many underground shops and cafes along the way to the Nanakuma Line, but keep looking out for those leading signs. If you get lost, just ask any helpful shop attendant to help you get back on track to the Tenjin-Minami Station.
- You’ll be walking almost the entire length of the Tenjin Underground Shopping Mall, from the northwest corner to southeast, for about 550 meters. After 5-10 minutes, you’ll find yourself at the Tenjin-Minami Station. (The station is in purple, TUSM is the yellow area running right-side parallel to the pink.)
- You won’t have to purchase another ticket (unless you’ve spent 120 minutes or longer transferring between the two stations). Just insert your original ticket into the ticket gate and make your way to the platforms.
- Get on trains that are bound for Hashimoto 橋本方面, the last stop on the Nanakuma Line.
- Fukudai-mae is ten stops from Tenjin-Minami or a 16-minute ride. Just keep your eyes on the lit-map indicator above the train doors to let you know where your next stop will be.
- Here’s a weekday timetable of trains headed towards Fukuoka University.
- Exit Fukudai-mae Station via exit #1 and you’ll find yourself immediately at the Main Gate (West Entrance) to Fukuoka University.
By Taxi
- It’s recommended that you travel lightly due to the slightly long walk (5-10 minutes) transferring between subway lines. If you have a heavy load with you, an alternative to the most expensive option of using a taxi straight to Fukuoka University (more than ¥3000) would be to catch a taxi from Hakata Station to the Yakuin Subway Station. There you would be catching the subway train to Fukuoka University a couple of stops closer than catching it from Minami Tenjin. The daytime taxi fee to get you to Yakuin Station from Hakata Station would run you about ¥1200, and the ride would take 12-15 minute ride.
