========================□■
Welcome to the new year and welcome back to the Treasure Hunt. This month’s topic is idioms. Idioms can be very challenging for learners, but they can also be something that makes language learning fun because they are often colorful. Recently the web has more and more resources for learning idioms, some with useful lists, and some with colorful graphics or amusing animations that help idioms stick in our memory.

First, UsingEnglish.com has a very nice idiom list on the web at http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/. You can also join in discussions about idioms and take some quizzes.

Perhaps even better is The Idiom Connection. This site has tons of idioms, including a list of the 100 most frequent idioms in use (based on corpora research). The idioms are arranged here by the letter they start with or by topic (animal idioms, clothes idioms, etc.). Each section comes with a list and a quiz. A very nice resource. http://www.idiomconnection.com/

In2English, an English learning website aimed at Chinese learners has a whole series of animated idioms that can help to connect the literal and the implied meaning of idioms, particularly some idioms used in the business world. http://www.in2english.com.cn/working/archive.php?cid=10021028

NDI, another site aimed particularly at Chinese learners has a long list of idioms that are come with illustrations and example sentences and conversations. The illustrations are simple but effective. http://www.tou.com.tw/village/epaper.asp

That’s it for this month. See you next month.
