A very Happy New Year to all LET members. I hope everyone had a relaxing
and enjoyable holiday. This month we are going to go back to stories.
This time, however, we will not be looking at listening or reading
stories, but rather making them. Recently, a number of sites have
appeared that let visitors make their own stories by selecting pictures
and adding text. These stories can then be saved and shared. This gives
teachers all the tools they need for a very nice communicative writing
activity. With some sites, the options include not only pictures and
text but also music and video, requiring, of course, a faster internet
connection to work well.

The first site, operated by the National Museum of Wildlife Art in the
United States, allows you to create stories using famous wildlife art.
This limits the kind of stories students can make, as you can imagine,
but it is still a lot of fun. It is also the easiest of this month’s
three sites. After choosing the images, students just write in the text
for each picture. Music can also be added. Finished stories can then be
published on the web for all to see.

Amazing Reef Moviemaker is a site where you can make your own movie. You
choose the story type and characters and create the action. You can save
the movie you make and download it to your own computer.

From Cave Art to Your Art. This site aims to teach people about art and
art media. There is a long introduction to different media used in the
the history of art and then students can make their own video using the
video and audio clips available and by adding text cards throughout the
timeline of the video. The drawback is that all the video clips are
about styles of art or famous painters, limiting the kinds of stories
that can be made. However, if your students are interested in art or
media, this is a great site. Instead of making a story, you could ask
students to watch the video clips and make a presentation about art or
media. http://www.sanford-artedventures.com/play/caveart/
